Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions that may be useful to you and/or someone you know. If you have more questions, please contact us.

General Information

How long has Asperger Works been in existence?

Asperger Works has been in existence since 2012 and has been a 501(c)(3) charitable organization since July, 2014.

What does ASD stand for? How about AS? What’s the difference?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is now defined by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as a single disorder that includes disorders that were previously considered separate:

  • Autism
  • Asperger’s Syndrome
  • Childhood disintegrative disorder
  • Pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified

Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) is an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, often alongside restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. Aspies, as they commonly refer to themselves, are usually highly intelligent, honest to a fault, and very focused when involved in a task.

AS differs from other Autism Spectrum Disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development. Often physical clumsiness and atypical (peculiar or odd) use of language are also reported.

Does Asperger Works have any people with AS in positions of authority?

We are extremely proud of the diversity of our Board of Directors and Advisory Board. Our Executive Director/President is an Aspie as are at least two other members of our Board of Directors. In fact, our bylaws dictate that our ED and at least twenty-five percent (25%) of our Board be on the Spectrum.

This insistence on having Aspies in leadership positions can make things difficult at times; but we conscientiously made the decision to not only “talk the talk,” but to also “walk the walk.”

I have heard a lot about neurodiversity. What exactly is it?

Neurodiversity, according to Wikipedia, is an approach to learning and disability that suggests that diverse neurological conditions appear as a result of normal variations in the human genome. This term was coined in the late 1990s as a challenge to prevailing views of neurological diversity as inherently pathological, and it asserts that neurological differences should be recognized and respected as a social category on a par with gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or disability status.

Can I interview you for a class project or a class paper?

There are many misconceptions about Autism Spectrum Disorders, especially Asperger’s Syndrome. It is our belief that education of the public and employers is a key component of our organization. Therefore, members of our Board would be happy to be interviewed by students of local high schools and colleges. Please contact us at

Could I invite you to appear at an event or a conference?

Although our organization is still small, we would be happy to appear at appropriate events and conferences to help us get the word out about our organization and to educate the public about Asperger’s. If you would like us to attend one of your meetings or conferences, please contact us at

Can you send me some information like brochures or pamphlets?

In order to keep costs down and to remain eco-friendly, we don’t send materials through the mail but ask instead that you share our resources via e-mail or social media.
