About Asperger’s Syndrome

Asperger’s Syndrome is an autism spectrum disorder that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It differs from other Autism Spectrum Disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive (information processing, conceptual resources, perceptual skill, and language learning) development. Most children improve as they mature to adulthood, but social and communication difficulties may, and often do, persist. Although Dr. Hans Asperger identified the condition bearing his name in the mid-1940s, the diagnosis of Asperger’s is relatively new having become standardized as a diagnosis only in the early 1990s. Thus, many adults on the Spectrum were not properly diagnosed until they had become adults.

Since there is not much understanding of autism – in particular, Asperger’s – by the general public, there are limited and often misguided services available to adults with AS. Additionally, it has been shown that as a result, this population of adults has the highest unemployment and under-employment rate of all people with disabilities. It is this that Asperger Works, Inc. is working to correct.
